Chapter 13

Darcy must have tucked the letter inside the book sometime in the last year. While it was strange to have found that the world had seemingly moved on without him, it was stranger still to see the evidence of himself in that lost year. As though an imposter had lived for him, and now he followed in the shadowed footsteps of someone who was him and yet not. This Darcy had met Elizabeth Bennet, known her and the whole Bennet family a full year. A year’s worth of memories blocked and yet they must be important if he had mentioned them to Georgie. Here was the proof that he’d known her first. Why was this important to him? That he knew her first?

Elizabeth Bennet who was now just down the hallway.

Almost without being aware of it, Darcy was halfway to the music room. The door was still ajar, though Eleanor and Georgie were absent. Miss Bennet was still seated at the pianoforte, concentrating on a Mozart piece this time. He was instantly brought back to that evening at Fitzwilliam House when the whole world had funnelled to the point of her figure at the instrument, swaying gently to the swells of Beethoven. She had bewitched him, completely. He had not even realised when he moved in her direction until she had looked up in the middle of her sonata, her eyes liquid and desiring. It’d made him forget his suspicions regarding her and Richard. It was hard to remember it now.

Mrs. Annesley greeted him with a smile, which caused Miss Bennet’s play to falter.

She reddened, though she still smiled disarmingly. “Do you intend to come all this way to frighten me, sir?”

Darcy stopped to lean against the instrument, enjoying the arch of her brow and the curve of her lip. “You cannot really think that I would ever wish to alarm you, Miss Bennet.”

“No indeed, Mr. Darcy,” she said softly with that curious expression of hers that made him think they must be replaying some scene. She watched him closely for the briefest moment, perhaps trying to discern if some memory had returned. It was a look he had become all too familiar with amongst his family —and apparently Miss Bennet. It grated, even when the wearer of that look was her, perhaps especially when it was her.

He simply could not remember and the weight of that failure … Darcy broke the gaze and picked up the sheet music she had been studying.

Mozart. Sonata in C Major. A favourite duet in society. Somehow, he felt disappointed.

“Do you often play Mozart?” he asked as he scanned the composition.

“Not very often,” she stated, “but his compositions make for easy duets. I have promised your sister to practice a duet with her. I have not the skill for a Beethoven duet.”

This surprised him. “You played very well the other day. I am not sure that I have ever heard Beethoven played so passionately.”

“I thank you for the compliment, Mr. Darcy.”

“You do not believe me?” He asked teasingly.
